Not helpful to me

April 25, 2014

Dear Sir

For the past few months the Sports section of The Royal Gazette seems to have adopted a ‘last name only’ policy. I’m not sure I understand the purpose of that limited identification but it is not helpful to me, anyway. What is the point?

Sports Editor’s Note: Thank you for your observation but the purpose of the surnames-only approach in photograph captions (I presume that is the area of your concern, although you do not specify as such) is because, like headlines, they are second mention. Anyone who is referenced in a story does not require to be fully identified again, unless there is more than one person in the story sharing the same surname or if the photograph is of a group.
