OBA should give all PRCs status

Dear Sir,

I tend to agree with the recent letter by R Whiting proposing that all PRCs should be accorded status.

If we consider the terms of the 1979 Warwick Camp Accord, the PLP and UBP agreed to extend the residential qualification from three years to seven years in order to be able vote.

Both parties later agreed that they would abide by a decision to be made on the matter by the then UK Secretary of State, Lord Carrington.

Lord Carrington decided that status would only be available to those who were registered to vote on May 1, 1976, thereby illegally disenfranchising many registered voters.

It is surprising that neither of the parties challenged this disenfranchisement by taking the matter to The Hague and having it rectified. The UBP claimed that they could not afford to do so.

The matter could be resolved simply and amicably if the OBA were to confer status to ALL PRCs and to all who were disenfranchised.
