Key questions for our tourism leaders

More action needed: Minister Shawn Crockwell

Dear Sir,

This letter is addressed to Bob Richards, the Finance Minister, Shawn Crockwell, the Tourism Minister, and David Dodwell and Mr Hanbury at the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

Mr Crockwell, how many of the following hotel chains have been approached by a cover letter or in person to tell them of the properties available for development in Bermuda — Hilton, Sheraton, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, Marriott Courtyard, Marriott Residence Inn, Best Western, Plaza Hotel, Regency. If you have, why haven’t you told the public? If not, why not?

Mr Richards, why have you not opened the banking industry, issued new banking charters, like they have done in Cayman? Forty-plus banks down there, you wonder why access to credit is so tight between Bermuda’s banks.

They have one billion-plus in delinquent mortgages over 90 days, talk about poor or non-existence customer service.

How many more impersonal ATMs do we need? Why do we have to talk to an answering machine when calling a bank’s main number or pay $75 for a manager’s cheque? Let’s get with it.

Maybe all of you should watch the wealth channel or cable Channel 148. Dubai and Singapore have no problem attracting billions of dollars in investments.

Dubai has an indoor ski slope for a cost of $350 million, a marina in the desert trenched from the ocean 40-feet deep surrounded by office buildings and millions of dollars worth of condos.

The money is out there, you have to attract it to Bermuda, you have to go get it, it won’t come to you. Get your fingers out of your butt and earn your exorbitant salaries.

What Bermuda should do is pay you all $1 per year and give you performance bonuses.

That’s enough for you to digest in one letter — more will follow. Mr Crockwell, what is the update on the Club Med property? It is now July, 2015 and your announcement was made in December, 2014. The Bermudian people are waiting for the ground-breaking.
