Think a march will get you work? Think again

Doing any good? Letter writer Camelot says that PLP and union marches do not help people get jobs

Dear Sir,

I must congratulate Wayne B Scott on his letter to the editor in The Royal Gazette on September 12.

After watching yet another “march” organised by the union/PLP members, I had intended writing my own letter, but Mr Scott’s was so good — any letter that I could write wouldn’t compare.

If only the union/PLP officials would understand that Bermuda needs outside investors to come to Bermuda and, ultimately, provide the much-needed jobs.

However, if any potential investors saw the numerous “marches” constantly being organised by whomever, they simply would not wish to invest any money here — I certainly don’t blame them, as the union/PLP think they are above the law and certainly do not have the best interest of their workers at heart.

I find it absolutely astonishing that the union seems to think the 1981 island-wide strike was a success. This strike was the death knell for the Bermuda hotel industry, with more than 95 hotel properties having closed their doors.

Bermuda had a reputation at that time for illegal strikes and many wholesalers tried to steer guests away from booking holidays in Bermuda in case there was an illegal strike.

This was told to me by one of the top wholesalers for the hotel business, stating that they could have been sued by their clients. So who lost out? Only all the hotel properties and hotel workers. So to all of you Bermudians that continually think marching through our streets will help you get jobs: think again, as it will have the opposite effect.
