Generosity made trip to Bermuda so special

Special place: the courtesy of Bermudians touched UK visitors during their stay

Dear Sir,

Last week, towards the end of a short trip to Bermuda, three of us were in St David’s waiting for some time for a bus that never came.

A rather ancient car pulled up and, to our surprise, its lady driver offered us lift to the nearest, more reliable bus stop. There were three dogs in the back of the car, including a Rhodesian ridgeback and a Weimaraner, together with household goods and a chair, and so I declined her kind offer, doubting that one of us, let alone three, could possibly fit in.

She would have none of it, and within a few minutes we were wedged in. As soon as we had mentioned where we were staying, she accelerated past the bus stop and insisted on driving us directly to our hotel. Once there, she refused to accept anything from us, telling my wife to give it to someone who needed it more, and drove off having wished us a “blessed day”. This memorable encounter was completely unexpected and we reflected that it would just not happen in the UK. So we simply wanted to share with someone our experience of Bermudian courtesy, friendliness and generosity, which can make your island such a special place to visit.

Many thanks.
