Stunned by hefty mark-up on medication

Dear Sir,Reading Saturday’s letter from “Stunned”, who paid $22 for a glass of Mollydooker Blend at a local hotel caused me a raised eyebrow. However, that eyebrow went a bit higher when I came out of my pharmacist this morning. I have to buy a heart medication called Imdur, manufactured by AstraZeneca AB in Sweden. The box I buy it in is obviously for the Portuguese market and shows a retail price including value added tax of €12.40. With the rate of exchange at 1.14 to the dollar, that brings the price to $14.13. If this is the price for the lucky Portuguese, why do my health insurer and I have to shell out $82.33 for this packet of 60 pills? It takes your breath away.According to a label stuck on the face of the box, this product was “procured from within the EU and repackaged by the product licence holder, who is: Waymade plc, Miles Gray Road, Basildon, Essex SS14 3FR”.How many middlemen are involved in getting a Swedish-made pill to Bermuda? Is there a non-profitmaking central authority in Bermuda that can buy these drugs at source and come up with a better deal for everyone? I dread to think what the mark-up is on life-saving drugs. And how do the poor folk who have to take them manage to survive financially?Another sticker on the box tells me the contents “may cause dizziness” — you bet they do.EQUALLY STUNNED
