The low-esteem message coming out of PLP is shameful

Dear Sir,

On this island I have constantly been made aware of race and hate. I grew up in a multiracial society, which has not been without discord, but the biggest difference here is that the black population really does believe that the white population is out to keep them back, prevent them from getting ahead, and this message is broadcast at them day in and day out by those whose only political platform is racial tension.

How sad that in this day and age people really believe that our prosperity and our levels of education are not intertwined. If we have a bitter, disadvantaged and malcontent segment of the population, how can this country progress? The main opposition reminds me of the anti-Obama Congress in the United States. Its mandate is to do nothing but obstruct.

No progress is made unless all people rise together. We cannot educate some people and allow others to fail, We cannot house some and leave others to sleep on the street, and we cannot be happy if we have a segment of the population that is unhappy, bitter and feeling disadvantaged. As decent people, we want the best for everyone; not vengeance.

Has anyone had a good look at Bermuda and wondered why there is such malcontent and extreme xenophobia? It has been created politically by those who have no ideas, no plans to improve the country and no desire to help everyone but to focus purely on racism.

Does it not strike you as odd that the one or two white people who have joined the Progressive Labour Party did so purely to improve their lot when they thought they could help themselves? No attempts were ever made to be all-inclusive.

I could not join any party that looked after the interests of one race only. The low-esteem message one gets out of the PLP is shameful. Do you not have pride in your own abilities and aspirations?

People who think of themselves as victims make no effort to help themselves. People who think of themselves as losers make no effort to improve and to educate their children because their defeatism starts in the cradle. Ambition is sadly lacking in a great many people. Large numbers of young men failing to educate themselves in favour of easy money is a sign of serious disconnect.

The breakdown in the treatment of women is another sign of decay.

You were given an opportunity to do all kinds of things when you won the election more than a decade ago and instead of making real strides at improving inequality in education, you wasted money or misused it on building things that were poorly planned or just done for your own financial gains. How disappointing, when you had the chance to shine.

The strident unionists failed to help a single citizen who was unwise enough to vote for them. We are now bogged down with the debt you created, and you think there is a plan to deprive you of jobs?

Who in their right minds would want people to be unemployed when we can’t even pay our own debts now.

The One Bermuda Alliance does not have all the answers, but it has one great advantage: it is a multiracial party and is willing to give everyone a chance to succeed; not to try to destroy what little resources we have without outside help.

The new, young hotheads who promise Utopia are even scarier. Now is the time to stop the threats, the rudeness and come up with some intelligent young politicians who truly have ideas to improve the country in other ways than legalising drugs and following the pathetic examples of our brothers and sisters in the ghettos of the United States.

No one wants to invest in a place where people pride themselves on saying no and are rude and minimalist.

You do this country no good with shouting and chanting. The days of revolution are long past. The places that progress do so by working hard at school and at work.
