Limit paid sick leave to cut waste in Civil Service

Brian Duperreault

Dear Sir,

In a recent article in your paper, Brian Duperreault pointed out enormous waste in Bermuda’s Civil Service, owing to rampant abuse of sick leave and almost seven weeks of annual vacation.

Two possible solutions could be:

1, Change the “almost seven weeks of annual vacation days” to two weeks a year. Include incentives for earning more, with an excellent work record over a number of years

2, Limit the paid sick leave to two weeks per year. After that, it becomes unpaid. Workers could set up a voluntary fund to help truly sick co-workers.

Those that really needed these jobs would have the choice to stay. Others, who have been abusing the system, could change their ways or choose to leave.

Either way, the result would be a leaner and more efficient Civil Service that is not such a drain on our economy.
