Tired of the theatrics and politicking

House of Assembly (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

There is this old saying about sheep going over the cliff because their leaders directed them to do so.

Mr Editor, I wish to play the role of a mountain goat. You may have noticed how a mountain goat is able to balance himself on the edge without going over.

From that vantage point, I would be able to hold my ground as I watch all the other fools plunge to their fate.

As in both religion and politics, people can become blinded like sheep and be led over the cliff when directed. Jim Jones and Adolf Hitler have shown us just how easily this can be accomplished.

In both of those above events, there were some very bright and intelligent people who did not change the leadership until the damage had been done. By then, it was too late.

Mr Editor, when you have been banged about like I and so many others have, you would have had to have learnt something about the life that you have lived.

It has always been a thing with me to try to understand just how so many Bermudians have graduated from the halls of intellectual learning over many years, yet we as a country still seem to be stuck in neutral today.

For those who had taken up the political sciences, did they only learn how to fool the masses with crafty and colourful spin? All we have been doing over the years is just preoccupying ourselves with throwing mud back and forth between elections while losing sight of what the real objective should be.

From where I sit, Mr Editor, I don’t see the sense in using Michael Dunkley or David Burt as an emotional political football, for that is just too easy a distraction or waste of my time bashing one political party against each other. I find that activity nothing more than diversion from dealing with the real issues.

My plea to our so-called leaders is to stop the theatrics and politicking, and get busy with what you were elected to do: make genuine change.
