Retired civil servants left out in the cold

Dear Sir,

I see a story in this morning’s paper (July 14, 2025) informing that the old-age pension is being raised and has been raised yearly for the past seven years. And if we can afford it, that’s very good. But what about the retired civil servants who have faithfully paid into their own pension fund?

The year 2012 was the last rise, and with the increases in GEHI health insurance, that “take home” amount has actually decreased.

There was debate in the House of Assembly last week on pensions, but no mention of any raise for that group of retirees. Many politicians raise the first-mentioned pension rises as proof of the success of their time in office.

OK. But as an employer, the Government is letting its former employees down.

If I’m incorrect, would one of these politicians please explain how I am misunderstanding the problem. Even if no raise is going to be forthcoming, at least recognise we exist and give some explanation.
