Caricom green paper achieved nothing

Devoid of detail: Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

What has actually happened recently regarding Caricom full membership — not surprisingly, absolutely nothing!

How is it possible to produce a Green Paper devoid of detail, moderate three Town Hall meetings with no intention of answering questions and then write a waffling Royal Gazette commentary, all the while not saying anything worthwhile, just merely going through the obligatory political motions.

That’s what Alex Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs has accomplished, a lot of fancy language to justify her publicly-funded salary.

What she fails to acknowledge, in all her overtures promoting full membership. is the that this farcical charade has effectively marginalised 38 per cent of the voting public.

Let’s hope the White Paper has more to offer and actually contains meaningful information we can understand and make rational decisions on without having to test Brandolini’s Law.

It will also be interesting to see how a negative response from the international business sector will be received, another valid reason to hold a referendum.

More importantly, will the White Paper clarify the mechanism in our Constitution that gives Government absolute authority to pursue full membership without a referendum?

The whole process has been a sham and Bermudians deserve better. It is painfully obvious that the PLP fears a vote based on common sense!
