Makin’ Waves has sold out of stand-up paddle boards at its new Church Street location, as the hot new trend in watersports grows in popularity in Bermuda.Co-owner owner Stuart Joblin said all four of the epoxy paddle boards he had in stock have sold out, with just one left.He said due to demand, a new shipment is arriving in the next few days of more Doyle paddle boards. He said he has had to order a further shipment of eight more higher-performance surf-paddle boards, which is due soon after this week’s shipment. The boards retail for $1,000 and up, he said, adding that at about 10 to 12 feet long, around 32 inches wide and four inches deep, stand-up paddle boards are very stable and easy to learn to use on Bermuda’s inland waters and off beaches in the surf.Mr Joblin said with the new, larger store and its 12-foot ceilings, 3,000 square feet of retail space and 100 feet of window space, he can now display all the paddle boards in stock.“It’s a fantastic exercise that gives you a good core workout,” he said. “And it’s peaceful to be out on one — you can sneak up on fish. I once went right over the top of an eagle ray. One of my very best friends puts his dog on his — or his daughter and takes them out with him.”Makin’ Waves opened at its new location near to Boyle’s last month — five months after it closed its long-time store on Front Street due to landlord Freisenbruch Meyer requiring the additional space.“So far so good,” he said of business at the new location. “We are cautiously optimistic and we are where we had hoped we would be. We are definitely in a better location for our local market. and the staff and customers love it. The challenge now is getting more stuff and restocking.”Mr Joblin added the store still plans to be open late until 9pm on Harbour Nights coming up on Wednesdays and will be open Sundays soon. Right now they are open 9am until 6pm.
