Cruise ship boosts business in St George’s

Stopover in St. George's: The nearly 600-foot-long Regatta, Flagship of the Oceania Cruises fleet, called in the Old Town yesterday, on its way from Florida to Spain.

She may have only carried 684 passengers, but she was a welcome sight in St George’s yesterday. The old-school luxury liner Regatta, flagship of Oceania Cruises, made a one-off visit to the Old Town en route from Florida to Spain, docking alongside Penno’s Wharf for the day.And St George’s business owners said they noticed a significant difference in foot traffic and sales for the day.“The ship business has doubled my sales so far today!” said Churchill’s owner Alfonso Harris. He said the passengers were mostly purchasing cigars and small amounts of liquor. The 594-foot long Regatta was built back in 1998 and is known for its Titanic-like grand hall staircase, and old-fashioned library. Most of its suites have private balconies. The CV Cafe owner Michelle Wales said the ship’s visit did make a noticeable difference but she felt the town gets even better business from visiting yachts, and building a marina should be a priority.Book Cellar owner Kristin White said: “The town is busier as the amount of people walking into the store is steadier than usual.”And East End Chamber of Commerce head Cheryl Hayward-Chew said there were an estimated 200 to 300 people at the Old Town’s ducking stool event. It is St George’s third season without a regular cruise ship.
