Hotels packed out over Cup Match

Midsummer classic: The Cup Match holiday provided a boost for business for local hotels

Bermuda’s hotels were virtually packed out over the Cup Match holiday weekend.Island residents enjoying a short break for the midsummer holiday boosted business for hoteliers in what is also peak season for foreign visitors.The trend was particularly apparent at Cambridge Beaches, just a walk away from Somerset Cricket Club, which hosted Cup Match this year. All 76 of the hotel’s rooms were occupied.Alexis Roberts, of Cambridge Beaches, said: “Twenty-five percent of guests were locals who chose lower category rooms at local discount rates.“The other 75 percent of Cambridge Beach’s customers over the Cup Match period were tourists, who chose higher category rooms.“The average stay of an overseas guest at Cambridge Beaches was four nights, with the average local guest staying three to four nights, usually over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most overseas guests — 80 percent — were from the United States.”Another West End hotel that was packed out for the holiday was the Pompano Beach Club.“We have 75 rooms, all were filled,” said co-owner Larry Lamb. “Most of our guests were from the east coast of the US, although we did have some locals. The average stay for an overseas guest was six nights and the average stay for the local guests was two nights.”Coco Reef Resort was also completely full over Cup Match, with all of its 60 rooms occupied. All guests at Coco Reef were from overseas, and their average stay was five days.The majority of guests staying at Coco Reef were from the US, but the hotel also hosted visitors from the UK, Canada and continental Europe.Elbow Beach was also extremely busy. With the main building at the resort undergoing refurbishment, the hotel is currently limited to its cottages, which offer a total of 98 rooms.“We were 96 percent full over Cup Match,” said Elbow Beach’s Sophie Dyer. “The majority of the guests were from overseas, mainly from the east coast of the United States. The average stay for these guests was four nights.”There were also few rooms to spare at Newstead Belmont Hills. The resort’s Kamila Bean said: “On Thursday we were 91 percent full and on Friday we were 95 percent full.”The Fairmont Southampton’s director of public relations, Jamahl Simmons, said the 593-room resort had seen a “very high occupancy” rate over the Cup Match holiday.“There was great mix of local and international guests with an invigorating sense of energy across the resort,” Mr Simmons added.Newstead offers a total of 60 rooms. All guests were from overseas with their average stay being three to four nights.The Coral Beach and Tennis Club was 25 percent full on Thursday, 50 percent full on Friday and 60 percent full on both Saturday and Sunday. All guests to Coral Beach Club were from the east coast of the US. Their average stay was six nights.According to the Department of Communication and Information, there was also a large turnout for the events held for tourists over Cup Match. An estimated 1,400 visitors came to the Visitor Stall at Cup Match and 400 visitors stopped by the visitor tent at Beachfest. The Department also hosted 180 visitors on the Sunset Swizzle Cruise and the Non-Mariner Race Cruise.
