Meal delivery service caters to the health-conscious
A new business in Bermuda is making house calls and catering to those who are working to lose weight.Eat Smart Bermuda is a catering business that specialises in making and delivering meals to the busy and diet-conscious.Following the guidelines of the South Beach Diet, the company prepares fresh, healthy ready-made meals and delivers them right to your doorstep.Eat Smart owner, Mary Smith says that since 2004, she’s been catering to clients who want to lose weight, lower their cholesterol, stabilise diabetes or just eat better on a busy schedule. But it wasn’t until now that she and head chef, Starla Humphrey have been able to find a commercial kitchen to work in that they could afford.“In 2007, we were looking for a kitchen, but at the time, it was a booming economy and I couldn’t find a kitchen we could afford,” Ms Smith said. Now, thanks to the owners of the Buzz Café chain, Eat Smart will now operate from Buzz’s Bakery Lane location.“We started looking again in January and Buzz came to us and offered us a sublease,” Ms Smith said. “We need a lot of refrigeration space so this worked out perfect for us. We come in after they close at 6pm until about 10 or 11pm.”“I just wanted to help them out to get their business up and running,” said Horst Eiselt, owner of the Buzz Café chain. “The first steps of opening a business can be very tough, so a little bit of help will hopefully will help them to start a successful business.”“I think there’s a market for what they’re doing. I don’t see why it shouldn’t work,” he said.Ms Smith says the goal is to make healthy eating easy and affordable.“Our main goal is to make it very affordable for anyone to have it. Right now it’s $30 a day and that includes delivery to your home. We’d like to get it down to $25. If we had 50 people sign up, we could do that,” she said.“You get breakfast, a snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner and a dessert. And it’s elegant — you get salmon, shrimp, steak, chicken — you know, it’s not just a salad.”Eat Smart can also cater to vegetarians and make substitutions if someone has allergies or doesn’t care for a particular item.Eat Smart head chef, Starly Humphrey, who has worked in the restaurant business for Buzz, Grotto Bay and Tucker’s Point, says freshness is also a priority.“We use good, quality ingredients — that’s our main thing. And it’s fresh. And we want to start using our local farmers like Wadsons for local organic produce and our local fish. I want to use whatever local that I can — whatever’s seasonal.”The two-woman team says the Eat Smart programme will help Bermudians to say goodbye to the post-work grocery dash without hitting the fast food.“There are a lot of Bermudians and kids that just need to eat better. The programme is so nice because it really works. It really teaches you that, ‘OK, I’ve got to eat every two hours and I’ve got to cut down on my starchy carbs’,” Ms Smith said.“Diabetes has always been a problem in Bermuda and it seems like now, it’s getting even worse. With health costs as high as they are, it’s an even bigger problem.”“It’s a serious health issue in Bermuda and I just want people to be able to eat better, healthier,” Ms Humphrey said. “Everyone’s just a little more health-conscious now and I really want to be able to give that to people and give them the convenience. Everyone’s so busy, so to have it delivered to your doorstep, you don’t have to worry — everything is done for you. And for $30 day, it’s a good deal.”To learn more about the programme, you can visit Eat Smart’s Facebook page at facebook.com/BermudaEatSmart or e-mail them at eatsmartbermuda@gmail.com.
