Following a passion for entrepreneurship, mother of two Christine Rodrigues left a successful reinsurance marketing career to launch the first of a number of planned retail ventures.Ms Rodrigues, a former marketing and event planner at RenaissanceRe, said she needed to take a break from the high-pressure corporate world.The first business she is launching is an online children’s toy retailer, Giggles.bm, where she says people can “browse my ‘aisles’ from the comfort of home”.Ms Rodrigues said she hopes to offer a better selection of toys, better prices because of her lower overheads, and more classic and wooden toys. She also offers the convenience of free delivery in the central parishes.The site will sell many popular toy brands, including Nerf, Lego, Play-Doh and Disney, as well as bikes, school supplies, children’s and baby clothes. Her classic toy lines include Smart Gear and Wonderworld.She hopes to eventually stock party supplies and branch out into creating corporate gift baskets.“I have had doing something like this in my mind for years,” Ms Rodrigues said. “I guess I just needed a break from the corporate world. Your health and wellbeing is important.”Having two children herself, a nine-year-old and 11-year-old, she has often been unable to get the toys or school supplies she wanted locally, and many times found prices were too high.She attends trade shows and purchases her products for Giggles.bm from warehouse clubs.She said she created most of the Giggles.bm website herself, with some help from an IT expert. Giggles.bm is designed and ready and expected to launch for shopping later this week.Ms Rodrigues added the small business advice she received from the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation was invaluable.Ms Rodrigues, who worked for Validus prior to RenRe, joins another former colleague, Jodi Virgil, in going it alone.Ms Virgil told us earlier this month she was leaving her HR administrator position at RenRe to follow her passion and launch a business aimed at helping others become more organised and efficient, Organised Solutions Bermuda.
