A former mechanic at now closed Wheels Cycles has started his own cycle repair business.Ralston Wright opened Wheels Wright Cycle Repair on Horseshoe Road, Southampton.Wheels Wright, located in the Butterfield Building, offers major and minor cycle repair service, tire repair, TCD exam, and damage estimates. He says he works on all cycle models with particular expertise in fixing scooters and Peugeot.Since Wheels closed its doors in August, Mr Wright had been working for a supermarket, but decided what he really wanted to do was start his own repair business, he said.“I think it’s the right climate right now to start a business,” he said. “And with the closure of two major repair and sale shops- HWP and Wheels- there is an opportunity to provide a good repair service and there is a demand for qualified professional mechanics.”Mr Wright is a certified motorcycle mechanic with more than 30 years experience. He was a senior mechanic at Wheels where he worked for 12 years before the established cycle livery, sales and repair business went out of business, citing the economic downturn. Before that, he worked for 14 years at Eve’s Cycles.Mr Wright holds a Bermuda College certificate in auto cycle repair, a certificate in advanced factory training from Ducati Cycles in Italy and a certificate in advance factory training at Aprilia Cycles in Venice. He says he decided to locate his business in Southampton after being unable to find the right space for the right price in Hamilton.“It’s very hard to find suitable accommodation for this business and overheads can be high in Hamilton,” he said.Mr Wright hopes to eventually offer online cycle sales but for now will focus on repairs.
