No longer just a mobile phone company, Digicel Bermuda has grown from 45 to 85 employees, and is taking over another floor of its Global House headquarters for a new Business Solutions department. And now with long-awaited reform of the telecoms industry, Digicel will soon be rolling out bundled services to the consumer.Wayne Caines, who this week marked his fifth anniversary as CEO of Digicel, noted: ”We’ve gone from being just a mobile phone operator to now offering internet, landlines, business solutions, cabling, and cell phones. All of these services offered under the umbrella of the Digicel brand.”“We are not just a mobile company anymore. We’ve evolved.”After a career in law and politics, Mr Caines joined Digicel in 2008, when smartphones were only just exploding onto the market. He recalls at BlackBerry’s zenith, Digicel had 17,000 subscribers of the popular RIM devices. In what he calls an “intense and demanding” job as CEO, Mr Caines personally meets with Digicel chairman and founder Denis O'Brien on a monthly basis, flying to whichever location is selected for the group board meetings.Reflecting on Digicel’s rapid growth in Bermuda, Mr Caines said he had a number of personal highlights, including:l Digicel maintains more than 50 percent market share of the mobile market.l The opening of the Court Street retail store that’s caused a business boom in North Hamilton.l Development and mentoring of Bermudian talent. Mr Caines said he wanted to give his personal thanks and appreciation to the entire staff of Digicel “who all work towards supporting Digicel’s business objectives”.l The expansion of Digicel’s products and services in Bermuda over the last year, including the launch of 4G, acquisition of ISP Transact, introduction of a new Business Solutions unit, and launch of the Be Extraordinary campaign.l Digicel was first to market prepaid data plans for smartphone customers.l Digicel community involvement including sponsorship of the Bermuda Olympic Association, Cycling Team Madison Digicel, the Bermuda Squash team and player Micah Franklin, Fraser match racing team, PGA Grand Slam, United FC youth soccer, Breakfast for Every Child Programme, Tomorrow’s Voices Autism Early Intervention Centre, and more.Going forward Mr Caines said he would like to focus even more on Bermudian training, including establishing a technical training programme in conjunction with the Bermuda College and University of the West Indies. On the new Regulatory Authority for Telecoms, Mr Caines said the CEO Philip Micallef has been responsive “and clearly has a global vision”.“The RA will be tested,” he said. “But they have our full support and we look forward to good things in the future.”Mr Caines said Digicel is excited by competition but there were areas for concern, including with regard to the KeyTech group. He said Digicel looks forward to seeing what “remedies” the RA puts in place to ensure no one entity has dominion over the market.Mr Caines said Digicel’s high profile court battles with Tbi and other providers are “quiet for now”, having largely been “obviated” by reform. He says his biggest concern right now is spectrum allocation by the Government and RA, and that it is done as quickly as possible.“Our industry cannot wait 18 months for this,” he said, of the RA’s spectrum allocation timetable. He noted LTE is “everywhere” in the US and mobile technology was moving at a rapid pace. LTE allows for faster data speeds, IPTV and other technology advances.“We believe that spectrum is a critical issue and its reallotment/reassignment is governed by statute,” Mr Caines said.“We believe that the RA’s proper administration of spectrum will be a key element to telecommunications direct foreign investment in Bermuda and will ensure that we stay on the cutting edge of innovation and global market trends in communications. More importantly to Digicel, we need to ensure that an even playing field exists regarding spectrum. Currently, spectrum is not distributed in an egalitarian manner.”He said Digicel has over 99 percent population coverage, however, there remained small pockets where indoor coverage could be improved. But he said it could take anywhere from six months or more to get Planning approval to put up new cell sites and there are often objectors, as in the current Warwick application.
