Wine bar, day spa maybe? Airport seeks new retail tenants

The LF Wade International Airport is seeking proposals for retail space left vacant by the downstairs duty-free shop.

The Bermuda Airport is seeking proposals to lease and operate the retail space occupied by the former duty-free shop, which has now moved upstairs. And they are open to all ideas, even maybe an auto showroom, pharmacy or wine bar!The space for lease is located on the ground floor of the LF Wade International Airport check-in area, overlooking the small Ware Lake at the north end of the terminal — with access to a terrace. If divided into two units, the total space would be 1,041 square feet per unit.An Airport spokesman said yesterday while the duty-free store was off limits to the public previously due to regulations, the business/s that take over will be able to be open to the general public, and furthermore, they will be able to open even when the terminal is closed. He said the DAO is also open to allowing a separate access door. The RFP said the pre-security space/s will lend itself to businesses such as “pharmacy, Bermuda speciality store, banking/money transfer centre, bookstore with coffee bar, ice cream, shop, day spa including nail care kiosk, $15 store, fashion, technology, entertainment, travel agency and ticket counter, wine bar, dry cleaning services etc”.The RFP also said: “The concept should offer passengers and the public an exciting new shopping and/or food and beverage experience.“It should increase passenger comfort and spending, allowing concessionaires to increase their performance and LF Wade to increase its non-aviation revenues. The spokesman said a board would evaluate the proposal and identify exemplary operators with extensive experience through a competitive process.”Operators may bid on one or both units. The deadline for receiving the RFP package is September 9 and the DAO plans to hold a briefing meeting on Tuesday, September 17.
