Owners of the Portuguese Bakery franchise have opened a new eatery in Hamilton’s Bermudiana Arcade.

Adriana’s Café opened its doors in the mall on Queen Street at the end of last month.

Its owners, a family-owned business that also owns Café Acoreano on Washington Street, decided it was the right time to expand.

Alicia Davis, the manager, said: “We saw a need for something more quiet and family friendly. Café Acoreano had become famous among men, it has turned into more of a sports bar, and we wanted another café where people can go to relax, have a coffee, do work on their laptop with peace and quiet.”

When asked where the idea came from to open another café, she replied: “My mother Adriana Amaral had the idea, she understood the need and we ran with it, that’s why we named the café after her, Adriana’s Café.”

The new owners brought the business from another Portuguese café, formally known as Baked.

Since opening, business has been booming and the feedback has been good.

“We have seen loads of people interested already, many people appreciate the new style of the café and the peace they get,” Ms Davis said.

The menu is similar to the Café Acoreano, serving a choice of coffee and teas, baked Portuguese goods, pastries, soups and hot buffet.

Ms Davis said: “There is seating where you can enjoy your coffee or meal looking over Queen Street.”

The hours of operation are Monday to Friday 7.30am to 3pm, and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

As with its sister café, Adriana’s will be doing Thanksgiving and Christmas platters.

The café will include a takeaway service. In the future, the owners plan to have a kitchen built within the café. Now they cook the food elsewhere and have it delivered fresh daily.

“Hopefully we can have the kitchen built in soon to do all of our cooking here,” Ms Davis said. “Right now it’s just more cost effective not to — hopefully soon we will be in a better position financially to do so.”
