Just six months after start-up, Bermuda’s online marketplace and mobile delivery service Sargasso Sea Ltd has announced its second round of expansion.

The company, which launched on January 14, is extending its service into more parts of Southampton and expanding its restaurant partnerships to a total of 20.

New restaurants on the Sargasso Sea app are Buzz in Warwick, Vegan 4 Lyfe, Om Juicery, Casablanca, and The Terrace. Additional restaurants starting up with Sargasso Sea in the next weeks, the company said, are Rosa’s, Docksider Pub, Fourways Inn and other MEF restaurant group favourites.

Further expansion in restaurant partnerships, delivery locations and grocery delivery options are planned for late 2019 and early 2020, the company said.

Colin Rego, founder and president of Sargasso Sea Ltd, said: “We want our customers to know that we’re adding great new restaurants every month, that we’re putting more delivery agents on the road to make sure they get their deliveries when they want them and on time, and that we are moving quickly to continue geographic extensions to both the East and West Ends of the island.

“Our customers have been asking for these expansions and we want them to know we hear them and we are on the move to meet their needs and are excited about what we have in store for them towards the end of the summer.”

The company’s expansion has been a significant boom for Bermuda’s gig economy, Sargasso said. Since January, the company has completed four rounds of recruitment events for delivery agents and management positions.

Their current complement of workers includes 48 delivery agents and three managers and they are continuing to add new delivery agents every month, the company said.

One of Bermuda’s fastest-growing start-ups, Sargasso Sea continues to look at new ways to generate revenue and expand their business partnerships, with founder Colin Rego indicating they are looking to add grocery delivery options to their marketplace by September.

Mr Rego said: “We are excited about the potential for new types of merchants to add to our app and are working hard to ensure our marketplace has something for everyone. We have been amazed at how quickly we have grown in the last six months, with our monthly revenue streams far exceeding what we originally projected when we launched.”

Sargasso Sea has seen a 300 per cent increase in weekly revenue since their launch, a customer base of more than 4,700 individual sign-ups for their app and more than 800 orders being delivered each week, the company said.

In May, Sargasso Sea was among 17 companies chosen to be part of the first cohort of Ignite Bermuda, the island’s first privately-funded business accelerator. “We are pleased to see Colin and the team creating new jobs and supporting local businesses,” Sean Reel, executive director of Ignite, said.

“The tenacity and drive to build high-growth businesses is something that should be respected as entrepreneurs will continue to be the rock of the Bermudian economy.”

The company is updating its technology and adding new features to the Sargasso Sea app monthly, it says. A customer support chat on the company’s website and app is available from 10.30am to 2am, Tuesday to Saturday and until 11.30pm on Sunday and Monday.

“Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or glitches you want to report,” Mr Rego said. “We have a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee on every order — if something isn’t to your liking, just let us know and we’ll fix it immediately.”
