The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation is hosting a meet-and-greet event for students in its summer student entrepreneurship programme today.The event on the City Hall lawn will be an opportunity for the students to introduce their businesses to the community and also gain valuable experience selling and promoting their goods and services.David Burt, the Premier, will join the students on the lawn to impart words of encouragement and to inspire them to learn and succeed through enterprise.“We welcome the public to come out, support and see what our young entrepreneurs have to offer,” BEDC programme coordinator Deshun Simmons said. “The ten successful participants this year have so far demonstrated that they are eager to work and grow their businesses.”Following the success of the last two years of the programme with participating students gaining valuable insights and earning money, the programme is continuing again this year. The SSEP is an eight-week programme designed to develop young Bermudians into the island’s next wave of entrepreneurs.The programme, which started July 6, allows participants, ages 16 to 23, the opportunity to learn practical business skills such as, earning revenue, creating a business plan, conducting SWOT analysis, and more.“This year, SSEP, has looked slightly different as we’ve had to get creative and think outside the box on how best to navigate Covid-19, while still giving students the necessary tools and exposure to make their businesses successful” Mr Simmons said. “Whilst Covid-19 has changed the landscape of how students might sell their products, we’ve been able to get them on online with the help of local virtual market, Amazuda.”Amazuda.bm is a site where you can browse and purchase goods and services. The SSEP participants have created online stores within Amazuda and all of their goods and services can be purchased via this online platform throughout the summer.A few of this year’s participants include Kion Knights, who runs Yard Barbers, a landscaping company, Zaire Lodge who runs BOGA Gaming Tournament, an online gaming tournament and Daijah Stowe of DS Photography, a graphic design, photography and marketing business.The event will be held from 11am to 2pm.• For more information on the summer student entrepreneurship programme and the 2020 participants see www.bedc.bm, e-mail info@bedc.bm or call 292-5570
