Ideas man: Marquel Waldron came up with the business idea for Xtreme Sports and won the Rocket Pitch competition for entrepreneurs

Economic pressure has forced the closure of the amusement and recreational facility Xtreme Sports Fun Zone in St David’s.

Operators have posted a notice informing customers they will permanently close the doors on the business at the beginning of September, virtually conceding that the pressure of operating under two years of a pandemic-driven economy was detrimental to the business.

When contacted by The Royal Gazette, owner Marquel Waldron confirmed that jobs will be lost, but declined to say how many.

The Xtreme Sports Fun Zone is a family entertainment centre that features multiple games and attractions.

It has been operating since October 2019, and a statement posted on their website on Thursday conceded: “Unfortunately, due to the continuous rise in operating costs, it is no longer financially feasible for us to continue operating.”

The statement added: “Over our years in business, we’ve had many loyal customers and provided many memorable experiences for people of all ages, which we are extremely proud of.

“We would like to express our immense gratitude for your support, despite it being a pandemic during two years of our three-and-a-half years in operation.

“Thank you all very much and we look forward to serving you from now until September 3rd.”

Mr Waldron won the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation’s popular Rocket Pitch competition, establishing his entrepreneurial pedigree, with his Xtreme Sports.

The Xtreme Sports Games became Bermuda’s newest corporate team-building event. The Fun Zone was an offshoot of that.

The company is encouraging customers to take advantage of Fun Zone closing deals and specials which will be in effect from now until September 3.

The company noted that the closure of Fun Zone will not affect the operations of Xtreme Sports Ltd, which consists of rentals, team building and event management. The Xtreme Sports rentals service line will continue to operate as normal beyond the closure of Fun Zone.

Xtreme Sports will continue to provide games for corporate events, parties, celebrations and others who engage the service.

Activities range from bubble football, zorb racing and dodge ball to football, darts and inflatable pool ball.

Extreme Sports also organises the annual Xtreme Sports Games, where corporate teams compete for their chosen charities.
