PR pioneer returns with new venture
When Liz Sloan (née Tee) started public relations firm Troncossi at age 28, she had to educate the public about the value of PR itself.
“In 2000, there weren’t lot of resources put towards it,” she told The Royal Gazette. “People didn’t really understand it.”
Still, corporations were receptive. By 2018, she had worked with 170 different companies.
“Troncossi had become quite the little powerhouse,” Mrs Sloan said. “I was working 60-hour weeks. I needed a break.”
She gave it all up to study cooking at Le Cordon Bleu London.
“It was a great experience,” she said.
She learnt how to make professional grade sauces, among other things.
“I don’t cook like that every day,” she said. “These were meals that would take at least three hours to make.”
She uses her training for special dinner parties.
While living in London, she found something else: love.
“My hairdresser called me and said, I want to introduce you to one of my other clients,” she said. “Then Patrick called me. Our first date was a walk in Hyde Park with our dogs.”
They were married in 2022.
Since the couple relocated to Bermuda a year ago, many people have asked Mrs Sloan if she is relaunching Troncossi.
The answer is no, but she is using her old contacts in a new business venture: a relocation firm called Vantara. They help executives move to Bermuda.
Mr Sloan handles clients, while she deals with the operations side.
One of their challenges is finding housing for newcomers to the island. Mrs Sloan said housing became tighter in the six years she was off the island.
“Housing is a big, big issue for expatriates,” she said. “They need a place to live. The quicker we can get that in place; the quicker they can start work.
“There are people coming in who need property at all levels. It is up to us to sort that out and find them something.”
She has been a landlord herself for 20 years.
“I know the agents who will work on a Sunday,” she said.
Mrs Sloan said finding private school placements for the children of incoming executives is also a challenge.
However, every case they deal with is different, so they have to cater to the individual needs of clients.
The Sloans are working out of their home, at present. When Vantara gets busy enough the business will hire more staff.
