The 2011/12 motocross season will go ahead as originally planned thanks to the generosity of Correia Construction. There had been fears that the upcoming season, already three months behind schedule, would be scrapped altogether after Bermuda Motocross Club (BMC) encountered difficulties raising capital to have the race track at Southside relaid. But with Denis Correia’s company offering their services to complete the massive undertaking free of charge, BMC officials are now keeping their fingers crossed that racing will begin as early as next month. However, this means that for the first time in years there will be no Boxing Day or New Year’s Day Classic races held.Jonathan Trott, BMC president, said it was necessary to have the track relaid after safety concerns had been raised over the previous course last season.“We had a successful season but we discovered that a lot of our riders were injured because the track was inadequate,” he added. “The track was dangerous so we elected to tear it down and start from scratch to make it right.”The season was due to commence last September but was put on the back burner after the BMC struggled to raise cash to pay for heavy equipment and new soil to be transported to Southside.“We have been struggling to get this track sorted out and things looked bleak for us,” Trott added. “The members felt strongly that the season was over because financially we couldn’t make it happen.”If all goes according to plan, Trott hopes to see the new season finally get underway by mid-January.“We should be completed near New Year’s Day but we are looking to actually start racing sometime in the middle of January,” he said. “We want to stress that haste makes waste and we have to do this track right so there will be no turning back from now on.”With the aid of others, the BMC began tearing down the old racetrack at Southside last July to make way for the new one that was designed by leading American track designers, Maley Motorsports.“Sometimes we have to take a step backwards to move ahead properly,” Trott added. “And the members are highly upbeat now that they know we are going to have a season thanks to Correia Construction.”
