Young people have been invited to make videos about the effects of technology as part of a competition.The two best entries will be shown at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute where an expert in the field will host a question-and-answer session.Bermuda Advocates for Safe Technology invited all students who are interested in studying electromagnetic frequencies to take part.The organisation said that coverage could include the effects of Wi-fi on plants, dangers of 5G and effects of cell towers on neighbourhoods.The effects of wearing a mobile phone, using a mobile phone not on speaker and “compulsive use of wireless tech” were also suggested as topics for the films.Bast added: “Videos can be simple, but students will have brainstormed, researched, interviewed, filmed and presented their views on the impact of EMFs and can put forward recommendations for protective solutions.”Students can work individually, as a group or as part of a science or technology class, to make a video of between two and five minutes. The submission deadline is February 28.David Carpenter, the Director of the Institute for Health and The Environment, a collaborating centre of the World Health Organisation, will watch the entries and choose the best two.The winners will be presented with a prize and have their videos played before a screening of Generation Zapped, a documentary about living in the wireless age which featured Dr Carpenter.Dr Carpenter, who spent some time in his youth at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and obtained his medical doctorate from Harvard, will hold a question-and-answer session at the event at the BUEI on March 12.Bast encouraged “our youth to participate and Bermuda to listen to the voices of tomorrow, the future environmental stewards of our island home”.It said EMF meters were available to borrow for the purposes of making videos.To obtain one or for more information, contact Sacha Blackburne at 293-5088 or by e-mailing bastinbermuda@gmail.com.
