Not so happy Hammers after Toon loss
Poor old West Ham. Losing 5-0 to Newcastle was not the ideal start to 2011 for my former team! We’d previously had a string of decent results as well so losing to the Toon now managed by our former boss Alan Pardew was a real blow as we try and climb out of the dreaded drop zone. The Hammers players really have to stand up and be counted in what is a crucial juncture in our season as we look to pull ourselves out of our current predicament.I believe we’re only a few players short of a side that can stay up but the guys up front really need to pull their weight and start scoring the goals we need to preserve our Premier League status. Some fans are heaping the blame for our poor season on the manager, Aram Grant, which is a bit unfair because he’s doing the best he can with what he’s got to work with. The club has been falling short for the past couple of years now, a perfect example would be to look at who replaced Dean Ashton when he was scoring 20 plus goals a season. These days we have no one who can do that job and that’s been a real achilles heel for us. We just don’t have the quality young players coming through the ranks like we used to have.Former England coach Kevin Keegan came out this week and said that Roy Hodgson couldn’t be blamed for Liverpool’s woes and that the club had been in decline for a while. Well, I think that pretty much sums up West Ham’s situation as well.Everyone is so quick to blame the managers these days. Look at Hodgson’s situation at Liverpool. He took over a struggling side six months a go and while he hasn’t turned them around yet, he surely deserves some time to stamp his mark on the club and bring in the players he wants. Also, you can’t keep pointing the finger at the manager because it’s the players who go out and play. With the transfer window opening earlier this month, everyone’s talking about David Beckham’s proposed loan move to Tottenham. My old mate Harry Redknapp certainly knows what he’s doing but personally I wouldn’t go for Beckham, even though I’m sure he can be an asset for Spurs. The trouble is he’s only going to be at White Hart Lane for a few months before he returns to LA Galaxy, so what’s the point? Beckham needs to look at himself in the mirror and say time is time. He’s 35 and needs to understand that he’s had a fantastic career but it’s pretty much finished.Elsewhere, what a week it’s been for Manchester City, buying Edin Dzeko while also having fights erupt at their training ground between two of their players, Adebayor and Toure. Whatever next? They’re in a great position because they now have shed-loads of cash to spend on top quality players, but with Dzeko coming in I think it’s time for Adebayor to move on.I don’t think his career is going downhill, he just needs to find a new home where he can play regularly and start enjoying his football again. If he chooses to stay at City I think it’s a bad idea for everyone concerned.
