Reds look to put spanner in United's works

Liverpool’s bitter rivalry with Manchester United is one of the greatest in football.United are on track to win their 19th league title which would see them overtake Liverpool as the most successful team in the English game. This weekend Liverpool can play a part in preventing that from happening and will be desperate to throw a spanner in United’s title charge. For Ferguson and his players, their midweek defeat against Chelsea makes losing to Liverpool almost unthinkable and they will be looking to bounce back with a win at Anfield. But under Dalglish, Liverpool have been performing well and certainly won’t need any extra motivating for this morning’s intriguing clash.Like United, Liverpool will also want to get back on winning ways having lost to my beloved West Ham last weekend.Boy, did we need that win and I was proud to be a Hammer after that encouraging display. I feel we have really started improving and played the ‘West Ham Way’, which is how I like to see the game played. For me, the most pleasing facet of our performance was our defending which was been quite fragile at times this campaign. If we can maintain this type of football then we should be okay and our new signing Demba Ba has bagged three goals in four games. It won’t be easy because it’s so congested at the bottom of the table, but we can avoid relegation.Considering we won the backing of Olympic bosses in the battle for the 2012 stadium, it’s important we avoid the dreaded drop to the Championship. Sure, I’m sad that we’re leaving Upton Park where I have so many fond memories from my playing days but you have to move with the times.I thought Birmingham City deserved plenty of credit for their unexpected League Cup victory over Arsenal.Fate was on their side and it was good to see a so-called smaller team land a trophy. It means Arsenal’s frustrating six-year wait to win some silverware goes on, although they are still gunning for glory in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. It will be interesting to see how much, if at all, their defeat to Blues has affected their confidence. I guess we’ll find out soon enough with the Gunners taking on Barcelona in the Champions League and Man United in the Cup over the next few weeks. I watched Barca’s game against Valencia this week and they weren’t that great to be honest and arguably were lucky to get a result. But the great teams do that, they find a way to squeeze it out and that’s how it goes. Arsenal are still learning how to do this, how to be successful, and I think it will take time for them to reach that level again. As for Ferguson derogatory comments about referee Martin Atkinson, well, I’ll leave it alone. Sometimes you just have to accept the things that are said, and to a certain point he is right about the calls that were made. However, as a coach you have to keep your tone although after a game that hasn’t gone your way, where decisions have gone against you, it’s hard not to speak your mind. But he has been around the longer than I have and if he saw something he is entitled to make his opinion known.Yet he should remember that Wayne Rooney was lucky not have been sent off for his elbow against Wigan recently he got very lucky. Finally, I’m hoping Nahki Wells gets the chance to play at Wembley Stadium with Carlisle United. All I can say to him is to take advantage of it and make the most of the opportunity if it comes. It’s great to watch another Bermudian follow in the footsteps of myself, Kyle Lightbourne and Shaun Goater. We’re all rooting for him.
