Goodbye Theatre of Dreams, hello Barnsley

I’ve been anything but a ‘happy Hammer’ this week.Watching us lose our relegation six-pointer to Wigan to bring the curtain crashing down on our six-year sting in the top-flight was a bitter pill to swallow. But after a campaign characterised by calamitous defending and passionless performances, it was probably no more than we deserved.Two-nil up at half-time and seemingly on our way to victory over the Latics, the wheels came off in spectacular fashion, sending us hurtling to a defeat and condemning us to Championship football next season. No more journeys to Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge for us, instead we have not-so glamourous trips to the likes of Barnsley, Doncaster and Millwall to look forward to.Our, now former, manager Avram Grant has to take a fair portion of the blame for our plight; he was never the man for the job in my eyes.I’d have loved for us to have stuck with Gianfranco Zola, a bright young manager, who I suspect could have been the man to lead the club back to its glory days. But for some strange reason the club’s owners got a ‘bug’ in their heads which told them they could get someone better. In hindsight, I really feel appointing Grant was the beginning of the end for us, he’s hardly got a great track record and took Portsmouth down last season.Relegation will no doubt trigger a mini-exodus of our players, but that may not be such a bad thing. No player is bigger than the club and I wonder if some of our current crop even cared whether we won or lost. For me we have to start giving our kids a chance and hopefully bring through the new Bobby Moores, Rio Ferdinands and Frank Lampards. Zola had our youths coming through nicely but under Grant we just haven’t seen them. It’s a shame, what’s happened to those kids? He probably just stuck them in the reserves. As for who take over the reigns, well, that’s anyone’s guess.I’ve heard a hatful of names linked with the vacant manager’s job over the last few days: Neil Warnock, Steve McClaren, Chris Houghton and Paul Lambert to name but a few.I’d love to see Warnock given a chance. He’s done a great job at QPR in getting them promoted and I think he’d be ideal for us in our current situation.Whether he would want to come is another matter; I’m sure he’ll be desperate for a crack at the Premier League with QPR.As for who suffers relegation this season, well, I think Birmingham City are up against with their away trip to Spurs.I’d like to see Blackpool avoid the drop but I think they’ll have their work cut out against –Manchester United at Old –Trafford.
