Wenger had no choice but to splash the cash

Well, at least Arsenal’s supporters will be feeling slightly less depressed following their club’s frantic dealings on transfer deadline day earlier this week. Not renowned for making last-gasp signings, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger finally pulled out the chequebook to beef up his wafer-thin squad with a quadruple of new captures. It baffles me why he took so long to act this summer; it seems seeing his team thrashed 8-2 by Manchester United last weekend was the straw that broke the camels back.I must admit, however, I like the look of some the players he has recruited to the Emirates Stadium. As well as Arteta’s arrival from Everton, the struggling North London, have swooped for Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan from Chelsea. They also signed Werder Bremen’s German defender Per Mertesacker, Brazilian Andre Santos from Fenerbahce and South Korea captain Park Chu-young from Monaco. If Arsenal are going to claim their first piece of silverware since 2005, they will certainly need their new boys to hit the ground running.Of the newcomers, I think Mertesacker could prove to be the most important; hopefully he can be the English-style centre half they have been craving since Tony Adams and Martin Keown hung up their boots.Because, let’s face it, Arsenal’s defending against United was diabolical.Their line was way too high up the pitch, allowing United to abuse them over the top and on the flanks; they have to defend deeper and better than that.Sure, that strategy may work against the lesser Premier League teams but against United you’ve got no chance.Wayne Rooney has been playing out of his skin so far this season; he’s looking like the player we always knew he could be.Then there’s United’s kids such as Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, who look like they have really benefitted from going out on loan to Sunderland and Wigan respectively. For me it’s United’s title although Manchester City are showing some early encouraging signs that could push Fergie’s boys all the way this term.Mancini has spent a helluva lot of money and has a wealth of talent at his disposal. For that reason alone, I wasn’t surprised they battered Tottenham 5-1.City are probably the only side that has more firepower than their cross-town rivals.People forget Carlos Tevez still needs to come into the mix as well as Mario Balotelli, such is their frightening array of attacking talent.I must admit, I’m a big fan of transfer deadline day, which is always a fascinating time for football fans; I love to see who’s going where and what not.Stoke City made some good deals done with Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios, and besides the top teams they had the best day in my opinion. My boys, West Ham are on a roll but I’m still not satisfied with their style of play. It isn’t free flowing yet, but we’re getting results and that’s what’s important right now.I’ll give them a few more weeks and then assess their realistic chances of challenging for the Championship title.
