We have to learn from Cup defeat
It was a harsh result for the Bermuda team against Guyana on Tuesday night but you have to stay focused on the task at hand.Although the draw knocked us out of the qualifying stages of the World Cup, it showed that the guys can compete with the other countries in the Caribbean at the highest level. The question now is where do we go from here, what are our plans going forward because we can’t do what we did this time around in having our preparations start just weeks before the first game. The planning begins now and hopefully we can turn around and produce a good showing because the difference between other Caribbean sides isn’t that much and if we can get one or two more players playing overseas we may just get over the next hurdle.Trinidad and Jamaica have taken their players and sent them abroad and it has helped them tremendously as they have been to World Cups in recent years, so we must see that if our programme is bearing fruit and follow in that mould. When you look at the start of the recent campaign, it seemed that the games were upon us very quickly and we weren’t ready for them like we should have been. We need to do a better job with these sort of things. We know that the next set of qualifiers are in six years’ time so we have to get ready now. The talent is here and if the players are really up for it then I don’t see why the next national team can’t go further than ever before.Reggie Lambe and Nahki Wells showed that if the players can get off the Island that the game as a whole can improve in Bermuda. It is great to hear that the Clyde Best tournament is coming back, it never should have stopped but those things happen with finances and so forth. But we as a country need to find a way to give our kids as much exposure as we can at a young age. That is the only way we can get better. We need to expose the kids to other methods and playing against youths from other parts of the world will do that.Let’s bring teams in and sends ours away and let’s see how they do because it is about them going forward. The teams coming here are very good and will test our boys and girls. It’s tough times out there right now in terms of money so any sort of competition we can get is well worthwhile.
