Plenty of football still being played

Anybody complaining that there just isn’t any football at this time of the year . . . well, they can’t be paying attention because every TV channel is showing live matches. From World Cup qualifiers to the Euro Under-21 tournament to friendlies, there’s plenty of action to go around. The Euro U-21 tournament shows that there is a lot of talent coming through and it just needs to be pushed and encouraged to go even further.Spain are the defending champions and will look to reclaim their title when they take on Norway today. They should have a relatively straightforward win.Today’s other match is between Italy and Holland. Most people would like to see the Dutch go on and play the Spanish in a rematch of their group encounter. You can’t count out the Italians, however, as they have a good nucleus of players who are playing in top flight football.* * *Real Madrid are back in the headlines this week. This time Luca Modric came out and told Gareth Bale he should move to the Spanish capital. It would be great to see him go overseas to prove himself but he has to remember that the game over there is much different than it is in England.Players move the ball faster, the style is much different and they have to be able to adapt from the kick-and-run football played in England. However, I wouldn’t be running to Madrid right now as they seem to have a little division in their ranks.Captain Iker Casillas isn’t speaking to Xabi Alonso and a few other players in the squad.Players have to be able to sort out their personal problems without interfering with the team. They can’t be expected to like everyone who they come into contact with. They are professionals and they just need to go about their business and produce performances. The rest sorts itself out.* * *Watching cricket’s Champions Trophy, it is interesting to see how these sides are giving it a real go and getting some surprising results. The West Indies are my team, as would be the case with most of those in Bermuda, but they can give you headache with their Jekyll and Hyde performances. If you are a Windies fan right now, you are seeing the future of the team.I’ve been around to see their highs and lows and the current team have the ability to be a great team if they apply themselves. One thing a team can’t have is distraction. And certainly David Warner distracted Australia after he threw a punch at England’s Joe Root in a bar.The Australians did the right thing by sending him home. He embarrassed himself and his country.Players should be allowed to enjoy themselves during a major competition but they have to remember they are not only representingut their team but their nation.Let’s hope he has learned his lesson and can move on.
