Watching Flora inspires young and old

The problem with training for May 24 right after Flora Duffy wins a triathlon on home soil is that, somehow, it doesn’t feel so impressive.

I went along to watch the race with Belle and we got really lucky. We watched all the cycling at Crow Lane (wondering how in the hell they didn’t crash), we walked along East Broadway and Front Street catching her each time she ran past, and then made it to the bleachers just in time for the finish.

We managed a few Flora photobombs along the way, not that she would have noticed as there was some pretty fierce concentration going on.

That level of grit and focus is just insane. What a supercool role model for our girls (and boys).

By the time we were done, Belle was ready to dedicate her life to triathlon training and be Bermuda’s next elite athlete.

I’m not exactly sure how long it will last, but right now, along with everyone else in the country, we’re riding the Flora Duffy high.

So, on Sunday, when I had a long run in the schedule for May 24 training and it was pouring with rain, we didn’t cancel.

My great friend and pacing partner, Elly, reluctantly drove over and then we set off for 11 miles in monsoon-like conditions.

I was adamant that “as Flora would train in this, so should we”.

We were soaked within about 20 seconds. It was wet shirts and squelching running shoes and we laughed the whole way.

At least I laughed until my feet felt like they weighed 10,000lb and my legs had gone to jelly. Then, Elly decided we should run another mile at the end, because she suddenly had Flora Duffy fever. I followed blindly, with a string of expletives running around in my brain.

The language at mile 12 was nothing compared to coming home to the black screen of death on my iPhone, though.

I thought I’d been so careful, but the rain had somehow crept in and, even though it was still playing music, there was nothing on my display.

Google told me to put it in a bag of rice, and then I listened to it beep and ring all night, but couldn’t do anything about it.

So I delivered my phone to iRepair on Monday and here we still are. It’s Wednesday as I write and I’m still iPhone free. They’re busy trying to save 13,000 photos, which I didn’t have backed up (I know, I know…).

The iPhone detox, as annoying (and expensive) as it is, has been interesting so far.

The first 24 hours were painful. It’s amazing how reliant I have become on it for work, as a mum or for a social media fix.

I went to meet a friend on Tuesday for lunch and she was delayed. With no phone, I didn’t know and I had no option but to wait. So I sat on the terrace with nothing to check or look at. I closed my eyes, turned my face to the sun and just … waited.

It was probably the most relaxing 20 minutes I’ve had in the last ten years. How bad is that? That was a bit of a wake-up call.

At the same time, I’ve been physically detoxing too.

I’m doing our Simple Summer Cleanse alongside my clients as, although my meals are pretty much always healthy, there has been a significant layer of chocolate and wine on top lately.

As part of the cleanse, we’re doing an afternoon juice that contains grapefruit, cucumber, celery, apple and ginger. It’s a small size and the fruit ratio is low; we have it with nuts or seeds to steady energy release, so it’s a great way to incorporate juicing without going overkill on the sugars.

Cleansing Grapefruit and Ginger Juice

½ grapefruit (skin removed)

½ cucumber

2 sticks celery

1 inch ginger

1 apple
