League looks forward to the future
The Bermuda Junior Service League will sponsor its second `Focus Forward - A Vision in Self-Awareness' seminar tomorrow.
The non-profit seminar will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bermuda College at Stonington. The aim, said Service League president Melanie Whaley, is to help girls in their early teens realise their potential and focus on their future goals after high school.
The forum invited 33 selected young ladies at the M2/SNR2 level (age 13 years) from the Island's 11 middle schools to meet professional Bermudian females working in such fields as law, accounting, dentistry, botany, mechanical engineering, mechanics, plumbing, and administration.
Additional topics of discussion will include image consultancy, safety and development, female health, future goals and aspirations, education, scholarships, and decorum and etiquette. Speakers scheduled to appear are Ms. Joanne Pulley, The Centre on Philanthropy, Mr. Alvin Harvey, Fairmont Southampton Princess, Captain Chris Wilcox and Eric Bean, Bermuda Police Service, and Dr. Wendy Woods an obstetrician/gynaecologist.
The Bermuda Junior Service League is a women's volunteer service organisation established in Bermuda in 1936. Last year, the League gave over $28,000 in fundraising proceeds to families and children in the Bermuda community.
The League, said Ms Whaley, takes pride in the belief that a group of women can be a powerful force for change. "We are an organisation of women striving to build a better community," she said.
"The Bermuda Junior Service League would like to acknowledge and to thank Dr. Joseph T. Christopher, Ministry of Education, for his support of the Focus Forward Forum, and also to Barritt's for sponsoring this important event."
The Bermuda Junior Service League is actively expanding its membership, Ms Whaley added. Bermudian and non-Bermudian professional or non-professional women are welcome.
"Joining the League is a unique opportunity promoting volunteerism, making a positive impact within our community, and developing leadership skills," she said.
