Court building tower crane to be shipped out

The Bermuda Islander will return a tower crane used to build the new Courthouse in Hamilton to Salem, New Jersey on Friday.

The crane, which was shipped to the Island to construct the building at the corner of Church and Court Streets, has been dismantled and placed on eight 48-foot road trailers. It will be at National Stadium until its departure on Friday at 8.05 a.m.

According to George Butterfield of Meyer Freight, the crane will arrive in Salem by boat and then be trucked back to Ontario, Canada by October 15. He explained: "All the cranes in Hamilton now, the tower cranes, are all shipped into the Island, and once they have finished with them they are dismantled and shipped back overseas."

"So most times when they come to Bermuda they are not owned by anyone in particular, they are just rented," Mr. Butterfield said.

In addition to the crane, the Bermuda Islander will leave the Island with empty containers and two 20-foot export containers with household goods and personal items belonging to people leaving the Island. The vessel is expected to arrive on Thursday carrying 114 containers.

In other shipping news, the Oleander arrived on the Island on Sunday with 218 containers including 42 reefers and five road trailers. The vessel left the Island yesterday at 8.05 a.m.

The Somers Isles arrived on the Island yesterday from Fernandina Beach in Florida. She discharged 137 containers including six reefers and four boats before returning to Florida this morning at 8.05 a.m.
