Don’t blame the breed

May 22, 2012Dear Sir,A gentleman on the front page of The Royal Gazette says his dog was mauled savagely by a stray “pit bull”. This is actually appalling as how this has made front page news with no proof of the aggressor being a pit bull at all, with numerous breeds and hybrids looking similar to that of a pit bull, it does not make it a “pit bull”.Three breeds fall under the term “pit bull” as there is no such breed. They include the American pit bull terrier (APBT), the American Staffordshire terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier. All are easily confused with breeds that appear similar but have altered temperaments. The American pit bull terrier has to be the most confused breed in the world with the media and public transforming the breed into a monster. As with any dog, there will always be irresponsible owners and poorly bred dogs. hat does not mean that all of these dogs are evil. The majority of domestic violence in the US is caused by men. Are all men considered evil and dangerous? No. Then why would all pit bulls be dangerous because of a few bad owners?I find it completely unjust and uncalled for to merely stamp an entire breed for a select few mistakes. The public needs to stop reading to media and watching television as stamping any attack as a pit bull attack. During temperament testing on dogs, 82 percent of American Pit bull Terriers passed while only 77 percent of Labradors passed. To conclude I would like concrete proof of the attacker as a pit bull before any more poor dogs are put to death or blamed and deemed as vicious for a common misconception. And lastly would like to commend Minister of the Environment Marc Bean for learning the facts behind this breed and understanding that they should not have to suffer for rare cases of aggression, or the poor decisions made by some owners.PIT BULL ADVOCATEPembroke
