A Nyland retreat
Body treatments at a new spa tucked away at Pompano Beach Club could leave you feeling good ? and smelling good.
Bermudian massage therapist Nyland Adams opened the doors to her Serenity oceanside spa at the West End resort yesterday.
Ms Adams is offering a wide-range of massage and body treatments at the spa ? some of them with mouth-watering names. There is the ?chocolate cake scrub? or the ?chocolate cherry mud wrap?.
If chocolate does not do it for you, there is the ?three two tango scrub? which promises to buff away dry skin with milk and honey, mango and mandarin or cranberry body exfoliation treatment. Ms Adams said the move to set up her own hotel-based treatment centre came six years after qualifying as a massage therapist. In the years since, she has worked on the Island both with private clients and as a therapist at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel?s Willow Stream spa.
Pompano owner Larry Lamb came to know Ms Adams after clients booked her for body treatments in their rooms. Over time it became clear that there was a demand for such a service at the hotel, leading Mr. Lamb to create a dedicated space for Ms Adams to use as a small spa ? and rent-free to begin with.
Mr. Lamb told the space ? which has views over open water and is located next to the hotel?s contemporary workout facility ? could be expanded, as demand dictates. Ms Adams said she could also expand the services offered through the spa to include manicures, pedicures and other spa treatments.
Ms Adams, who studied massage therapy at the Philadelphia School of Massage Therapy, had previously worked for more than eight years at the Bank of Bermuda. Deciding to take a break from the banking sector, she went to visit her sister in Philadelphia and ended up enrolling at the massage therapy school.
?I was their first foreign student; they treated me like gold,? she said, adding that the school had offered her a teaching position at their Virginia campus. Instead she decided to come home to Bermuda and practice her new trade.
In addition to fruit and chocolate treatments, the Serenity spa offers a host of other massage and skin therapy options. Ms Adams said mud wraps had also proven popular. The treatment room is equipped with both a shower and a deep water-jet bathtub to rinse off in after some of the treatments. Serenity spa treatments can be booked by hotel guests or local residents.
Pompano has been operated by the Lamb family since 1954.
