Bermuda to look at NAFTA
yet, Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul said yesterday.
Dr. Saul just returned to Bermuda from the World Economic Forum in Geneva, where NAFTA was one of the major items up for discussion.
As a non-exporting country -- "we don't even sell bananas,'' -- "we're not quite certain how we would fit into it,'' Dr. Saul said of NAFTA.
"Once it settles down and other countries start to join, for example, Chile, we indeed will look at it''.
Now that the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is passed, a General Agreement on the Movement of Goods, Trades and Services is being developed, and Dr. Saul said membership in NAFTA could be an advantage for Bermuda with respect to that agreement.
But it was too soon to say and Government will likely look into NAFTA membership later this year.
It is thought US President Bill Clinton will have to give "high priority'' to bringing Caribbean countries into NAFTA in the future.
