prompted one grocery to extend its hours during the rest of the week.

The Co-Op Supermarket -- which is affiliated with the Bermuda Industrial Union which opposes Sunday opening -- will now be open until 10 p.m on weekdays and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

General manager Harrison Isaac said the Co-Op's new hours -- which include opening at 7.30 a.m. -- will start today.

He said he hoped the move would help the store compete in the arena created by stores opening on Sundays.

Mr. Isaac said Sunday was a day of rest meant to be shared by the whole family and the Co-Op would not encroach on that.

YOUNG MEN HONOURED AWD Young men honoured The National Association for Reconciliation (NAR) will honour the young black male at its fourth annual banquet.

The NAR's Eva Hodgson said the banquet would say to the community that young black men with exemplary behaviour and character should be honoured.

"There are so many negative things in the Press about young black men,'' she said. "We need to highlight those who are positive. There is value in young black men.'' Dr. Hodgson said clubs, business organisations and church groups were encouraging their members to attend the October 26 banquet at the Belmont Hotel.

The $50 tickets can be obtained by calling 293-2423.

TEACHERS BACK IN CLASS ED Teachers back in class Primary school teachers will receive lessons in peer mediation before classes resume this week.

The training will be the last step in the Coalition for the Protection of Children's effort to secure the peer mediation programme in every Government primary school -- making Bermuda the only country to have the scheme in all primary schools.

Peer mediation -- which allows students to air their grievances in the presence of student and teacher mediators -- is in use in six primary schools and three secondary schools on the Island.

Training for some 300 teachers will be held today at the Southampton Princess and Sonesta Beach Hotel.

Coalition head Sheelagh Cooper said the nine schools currently using the programme have seen "a marked decrease in violence and an overall improvement in the school climate''.
