Duty-free store open in airport departure area
the Airport, with only their convenience in mind.
Businessmen Mr. John Casling and Mr. Edgar Wilkinson, have constructed a new duty-free store, the only one in Bermuda strategically located in the middle of the departures area, easily accessible to passengers checking in.
"Our company, Airport Shops Limited, has begun to upgrade all of our airport shops. We intend to upgrade all three stores,'' Mr. Casling said yesterday.
The new shop carries all of the famous Parisian fragrances, from Chanel to Yves St. Laurent. Shoppers will also find designer sunglasses and watches, along with familiar items like cigarettes and candy. The most curious display, however, is a stand with eerily life-like stuffed monkeys, in a variety of poses.
"We have had a whole range of clothing designed specifically around the Bermuda crest,'' Mr. Casling noted.
The new store, which required about nine months to go from concept to reality, is unique in another way. The only duty-free item that it will not offer is liquor.
"We have no intention of selling liquor,'' Mr. Casling said, "And in addition to that, there are no bonded facilities in the Airport, besides the facilities in the sterile area, beyond US customs.'' The new stores will be open for every flight that leaves the Island, with a sales staff of two.
"We will be open even for the early morning American Airlines flight, up until the late evening British Airways flight,'' he noted, "And as time goes on, we will have learned exactly what goods are selling and what is in demand.''
