Insurance website launched

industry will have a helping hand now the Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies has launched a web site.

The site will, in addition to giving information on the foundation, also help students interested in careers in Bermuda's insurance industry by enabling them to post their resumes on the site -- www.bfis.bm.

BFIS chairman Brian Hall said: "Although this service for students is still in its infancy we felt that we should not limit it to just the insurance, actuarial and finance students which BFIS supports through our Scholarship, Mentoring and Intern Programmes.

"We wanted students majoring in other subjects, which are also important to the industry to be included,'' he said.

"These could include accounting, international business, marketing and computer technology.'' Catherine Lapsley, BFIS Executive Director, said: "Our goal is to build a site which will benefit Bermudian students as well as our donors by bringing them together in an easily accessible and timely manner.

Only full-time students will be able to have their resume posted on the site.

Although the site is still being developed we wanted to make it available to students now who are looking for summer vacation internships. I say 'internships' rather than 'jobs' to highlight the Foundation's commitment to try to ensure that students find meaningful jobs which will continue their learning process and underscore what they are studying at college.'' She pointed out that students can also see a sample resume on the site which highlights what information it is important to include.

Potential employers can view a list of students showing what type of work they are looking for, what they are studying. Types of work can include work shadowing, summer or Christmas vacations, internships, co-ops or permanent jobs for those just about to graduate, the organisation said.

The BFIS website also includes information on the Foundation's current donors and trustees as well as showing potential supporters donors how they can help the Foundation either through donations, mentoring or the offer of internships.

Established in 1996, The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies' purpose is to ensure that over time Bermuda's insurance companies have a pool of well-educated and prepared Bermudian staff to draw from.
