Islands look at competitiveness
reviewed today as Bermuda College hosts its second Tourism International Forum.
The two-day session will bring some 90 tourism experts from here and islands such as Antigua and Barbuda, Cyprus, St. Kitts and Nevis and the Falklands together to address competitiveness and innovative approaches to tourism in the 1990s.
Exactly a year after the first island tourism international forum which focussed on price and value issues, the forum will take into account research and experience on competitiveness strategies with particular emphasis on marketing and product innovation, expanding market share, promoting investment from non-traditional sources, total quality management, and linkage of tourism with other economic sectors.
Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge will officially open the forum shortly after 9 a.m. at the College's Stonington campus.
The format will include keynote speakers, parallel strategic planning panels to consider the results of an international Delphi Survey on Competitiveness Issues which is currently underway, and expert presentations followed by responses from island representatives.
Organiser Mrs. Sue Rhodes said the forum will address issues of concern to island resorts in order to identify problems and opportunities, evaluate alternatives, and to formulate recommendations for action.
Overseas participants will stay at some of the Island's premier properties to get a first-hand look at Bermuda's tourism product.
Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan will deliver closing remarks tomorrow afternoon.
And the Tourism Department will host a post-forum briefing and tour on Wednesday.
