Top high-tech companies find Bermuda fertile market

The managing director of Bermuda Microsystems, computer distributor for two of the industry's technology titans -- Sun Microsystems Inc. and Dell Computer Corp. -- said technology from these two companies lend themselves well to the Bermuda market.

The exclusive Bermuda distributor for California-based Sun and a representative for Dell's Caribbean/Latin American distribution territory, including Bermuda, was started in 1991 by Mr. Philip Cooper.

Bermuda Microsystems, started in 1991 as a Sun distributor, added distributorship of Dell to its repertoire in 1993.

"The Sun is a network machine and Dell is a good service oriented company,'' he noted.

Sun's powerful UNIX workstations, are popular in financial, retail, telecommunications, transportation and commercial publishing sectors, help drive the technology systems used by companies.

The computer market is "highly competitive'' in Bermuda, said Mr. Cooper, active in the sales component of the business.

Though he would not disclose Bermuda Microsystem's 1994 results -- because of that highly competitive aspect -- he did say the privately-held businesses sales were up 30 percent over 1993.

Dell, with 1994 sales of $2.8 billion, is the world's leading marketer of personal computers, a Global Fortune 500 company, and in the top five personal computer vendors while Sun Microsystems Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, California and founded in 1982, is a leading vendor of UNIX workstations.

Improving on business results will be tightly linked to service, noted Ms Caroline Armstrong, marketing manager for Bermuda Microsystems.

"Offering value added services and support, will probably win out in the long run. Everybody is involved at Bermuda Microsystems, everybody is knowledgeable about what is going on with our customers,'' said Ms Armstrong, among nine staff.

"Because of the size of Bermuda hardware sales are probably limited, the Island is not in a stage of high growth for PCs, it is in a maintenance (phase),'' she noted.

"The company is lean and aggressive so we can react quickly,'' commented Ms Armstrong.

Another advantage Bermuda Microsystems, located on Par-La-Ville Road, has is a healthy stock room for potential buyers, from the family looking for their first PC to businesses who are looking for 50 workstations, claimed Ms Armstrong, who prior to joining Bermuda Microsystems 18 months ago, worked with a company that sold IBM software in Ontario.

Mr. Jim Clark is the general manager of Bermuda Microsystems while Mr. Brian Scott is the manager of the technical department.
