Bermuda -- the new Hong Kong-- Business infrastructure puts Island ahead of the rest of the world for e-business claims company chief

Bermuda is the best place in the world to headquarter an e-business, according to start-up Global e-biz Ltd.

The regulations, tax, fiscal policies and e-commerce Ministry all make Bermuda the Hong Kong of e-commerce, according to Basil Peters, chairman of Global e-biz.

And he says that these factors will make Bermuda the place to do e-business for all kinds of companies all over the world.

Global e-biz is one of Bermuda's incubator businesses at e-Venture Centre, a branch of Centre Solutions and based in Pitts Bay Road.

In an interview with The Royal Gazette Mr. Peters said that he expects his company in the next few years to help other companies make millions out of the Internet.

Global e-biz, which has just secured its first client, Please Mum, a children's store in Canada, says it has worked out a kind of template which they can use to help companies get the most out of the Internet.

The system will look at the whole operation in a bid to take it on-line, including invoicing, payroll, and even the amount of holidays a member of staff has left to take in a year.

The method is as ahead of the times as the idea of computer systems being linked was in the days of individual pcs when they first appeared in offices, according to Jeff Brock, the Chief Executive Officer of Global e-biz.

"We are hoping to build towards Global 2000,'' said Mr. Peters.

In the same way that Fortune 500 measures the top companies in the United States, Global 2000 is the less well known globalised list of top companies.

The company is just seven months old and currently has eight employees. Mr.

Peters added: "We think we have a world class team with a great breadth of knowledge.'' And the support and back-up they have received from the e-Venture Centre has allowed them to build their system with the backing of a large corporation.

Mr. Brock said: "What we do is we help companies become e-commerce companies and help them go global by using our systems.'' And he said that all transactions will be legally made in Bermuda even if they are done between Hawaii and Venice.

"This way they will benefit from the great legislation you have here,'' he added.

"Bermuda is the Hong Kong of the e-business world. We are not from Bermuda and we could have set up our business anywhere in the world. But we chose here. We looked everywhere in the world to put our headquarters and Bermuda was easily the best choice. Bermuda is the best place in the world to head quarter an e-business.'' Mr. Peters added: "One of the things is that it has so many obvious advantages. It has a great reputation, a tax neutral environment and has got one of the only e-commerce ministries in the world. The Government has passed some wonderful e-commerce business regulations. I think Bermuda is under-appreciated in the world.'' Now they hope to go into joint ventures with other companies using Bermuda as the place where transactions are made.

And they will be installing a global sales force to make sure that if need be, business can be done face-to-face with clients.

"We are not so much an e-commerce fix-it company but an e-commerce accelerator,'' said Mr. Brock. "We see ourselves as a new member of the team.

"We have seen companies take years to discover how to do it on their own and millions of dollars on the way, and not always succeed. We can build it once and use it time and time again for different companies. We can give them the results they want in a couple of quarters instead of a couple of years.'' Glad to be here: Basil Peters and Jeff Brock of Global e-biz.
