BTC inquiry findings set to be made public

A Board of Inquiry's secret report into the Bermuda Telephone Company is set to be made public this week.

Home Affairs Minister Maxwell Burgess said he would reveal the Board's recommendations once he has had a chance to analyse them.

The three-man Board, led by US industrial expert Dr. Dan Kruger, met for four days to probe BTC's management practices and labour relations.

The hearings also centred on revelations in The Royal Gazette that 14 managers were made redundant despite contrary advice from original consultants.

And union representatives and BTC executives met on the first day of the investigation for an arbitration meeting to thrash out the issues surrounding a four-day unofficial strike by 200 workers in March.

Dr. Kruger, backed by Senate President Alf Oughton and former Cabinet Secretary Ken Richardson, is tabling all his recommendations in one top-level document.

Both union leaders and BTC officials have been advised not to comment until the recommendations are made public.

But Mr. Burgess said he was "looking forward'' to receiving the report, which was due to be finished later this week.

"I understand the writer of the report is making good progress,'' he told The Royal Gazette .

"I should have a clear direction towards the end of the week about when it will arrive and the public should know more around the middle of next week.

"I'm very much looking forward to receiving the report.'' GOVERNMENT GVT
