Companies join forces to service base lands

Jobs could be created in Bermuda under a plan by two firms to set up a new company unique to the Island.

Bermuda Aviation Services and SERCO Facilities Management have teamed up to create a new company called North Rock Facilities Management.

It will aim to carry out a variety of services including maintaining commercial and private buildings as well as providing the staff and administration for businesses.

BAS chief executive officer Eugene Bean said the new company would be aiming its services at the base lands once they were redeveloped.

"We are looking at the future development that is going to take place in Bermuda with some focus on what could happen at the base lands,'' added Mr.

Bean.

BAS and SERCO have applied to incorporate the new company under the 1981 Companies Act.

The description says it will be in the business of grounds maintenance and managers and operators of commercial buildings, houses, apartments, condominiums and any other buildings.

SERCO Facilities is a Canadian company that comes under the same umbrella group as SERCO Aviation Services which in February last year signed a $13 million contract with Government to run services including air traffic control, weather and flight information at the airport.

Other services it controls at the airport include maintaining buildings, sewage and lighting systems. The company won the contract after the US military moved out.

Under Bermuda law new companies must be 60 percent Bermudian owned and it is not known what the exact make-up of North Rock will be.

Mr. Bean added: "North Rock will be more than maintaining the structural or engineering components of a building. It involves setting up systems, staffing and administration of the building,'' said Mr. Bean.

A company, he said, might put out a tender to people asking them to help staff the new business. The new firm would bid and take over the staffing and administration.

He said it was too early to say how many jobs would be created or give more details of the plan.

But Mr. Bean added: "I do not think there is anything like this in Bermuda.

We will be creating jobs ourselves. That is the whole point, it increases employment on the Island.''
