Concorde may fly to Bermuda
Airways' decision this week to base one of its high speed aircraft at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport for charters.
The Island is one of the destinations being promoted for the service after BA takes the plane -- the fastest passenger aircraft in the world -- off the unprofitable London to Washington route, which will be scrapped as of November 8.
The airline, which has already arranged a series of 12 weekly charters between New York and Barbados this winter, is hoping to extend its service to destinations "in the Caribbean, South America, Mexico and Bermuda''.
The trips will be aimed primarily at companies that want to provide their employees with rewards or incentives, spokeswoman Mrs. Sallie Singleton said.
"Because it's based in New York, we're looking at the corporate incentive market,'' Mrs. Singleton told The Royal Gazette . "We've already had two charters (to Bermuda) this year -- one in June and one in September.'' While those two trips were successful, Mrs. Singleton could not say how often the New-York based Concorde might fly to the Island.
"It's not a weekly service,'' she stressed. "We'll just have to see what type of demand we have for Bermuda.'' In any case, she added, "it's nice to have a Concorde on this side of the Atlantic.'' A flight on the Concorde between New York and Bermuda would take about 40 minutes, she said.
