Cruise ship passengers injured
Hurricane Luis over the weekend suffered more than seasickness.
Three passengers were rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital Emergency Department when Fedor Dostoevsky limped into Hamilton Harbour yesterday.
Two of the passengers were treated for minor injuries after they were hurled about the ship in high winds and rough seas. The third has been detained overnight, supervising nurse at the King Edward VII Hospital Mrs. Naomi Swan said last night.
The cruise ship with 458 European passengers on board was scheduled to berth in Bermuda at 8 a.m. on Sunday en route to the Azores before returning to Germany on a circular route that includes New York and Bermuda.
Instead, the formerly Russian, now Bahamian ship arrived yesterday morning and sailed at 4 p.m. after dropping off the injured passengers.
"They got caught in the fringe of the hurricane,'' said Captain John Moore of Meyer Agencies which acted as agents for the ship. "The ship is a lot smaller than the cruise ships we normally have here so it suffered more.'' Captain Moore added that the storm had also damaged store rooms and provisions, but that the damage was not extensive. Fourteen other passengers, scheduled to disembark here also left the ship yesterday.
