The telecommunications company at the centre of a probe into the validity of its licence has been given the all clear by an independent commission.
Quantum Telecommunications Ltd., the firm hired to provide fibre-optic cable for security cameras in Hamilton, was investigated by the Telecommunications Commission after rivals BTC complained that their licence was not valid.
Although Quantum does have a licence, BTC argued that the company had to use its own equipment. Quantum had leased the fibre-optic cable from BELCO, which does not have a licence to provide services.
Quantum keeps licence Yesterday Telecommunications Minister Sen. E.T. (Bob) Richards confirmed that the commission had decided that the lease arrangement was valid.
"The commission has upheld Quantum's licence as valid, which is the main point, and also decided that BELCO does not need a licence,'' Sen. Richards said.
"There are a lot of things being thrown up to delay Quantum's interconnection to go into competition with BTC and I'm pleased that the commission considered this matter expeditiously so that the process can be completed.''
