helping to revive the tourism industry.

This was the news from Bermuda Maritime Museum director Edward Harris who has just completed a trip to the Far East where he attended a conference on fortifications in Mauritius.

He said: "This conference is indicative of the world-wide interest now being taken in fortifications as an important class of historic monuments which have a major role to play as economic assets in the business of heritage tourism.'' At Mauritius, Dr. Harris spoke on Bermuda's fortifications with special reference to their use in the heritage tourism trade and toured several surviving forts.

While overseas, he also visited Hong Kong and toured Lei Mun Fort, which is to be restored as a museum, and Stanley Barracks.

There he spoke on Bermudian forts again.

And he visited Singapore where he met officials responsible for the restoration and exhibition of Fort Siloso, "a major element in the creation of Sentosa Island as an outstanding site for visitors and recreation''.
